Spain's steel production dropped by 2.8% in march

According to the data from the Spanish Steel Producers' Association (UNESID), Spain's steel production dropped 2.8% year-on-year, reaching 982,000 metric tons. However, this figure showed a 3.5% increase compared to the previous month, February.

In March, Spain recycled 711,000 metric tons of scrap for the production of new steel products, marking a monthly decrease of 8.2% and an annual decrease of 27.6%.

In the European Union, steel production in the January-February period of 2024 fell by 0.9% compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling 21.1 million tons. Global steel production reached 306.9 million tons during this two-month period, showing a 3% year-on-year increase.

UNESID General Director Andrés Barceló highlighted that despite the fluctuations experienced over the past two years, preliminary data for this year is optimistic, although caution is still advised. He also noted a slight recovery in production since the end of last year. Barceló stated, "The steel sector is committed to decarbonization, but for this to happen, authorities need to ensure conditions that guarantee the competitiveness of companies."
