SMS group to transform Winjoy's rolling mill into an advanced copper strip production facility

Zhejiang Winjoy New Material Co., Ltd., a privately owned company founded in 2017, has awarded SMS group a contract for the comprehensive modernization of its existing six-high reversing Demag cold rolling mill.

SMS group to transform Winjoy's rolling mill into an advanced copper strip production facility

As part of the agreement, SMS group will supply a complete package of modernized mechanical and electrical equipment designed to convert the existing rolling mill into a 1,250 mm-wide six-high CVC® plus (continuously variable crown) copper strip rolling mill. The modernization will be carried out at the facility located in the Hangzhou Bay Economic Development Zone in Shaoxing, China.

Originally commissioned in 1988 primarily for tinplate production, the facility will be transformed under this project into a high-performance copper rolling solution. After modernization, the rolling mill will reach an annual capacity of approximately 100,000 tons and will enable the production of copper and copper alloy strip with a maximum entry thickness of 20 mm, a minimum exit thickness of 0.5 mm, and a width range of 1,150 to 600 mm. This transformation will significantly expand Winjoy’s production capacity and product flexibility.

Beyond a simple equipment upgrade, the project also highlights SMS group’s engineering expertise and sustainability approach. The modernized six-high rolling mill will be equipped with an advanced CVC® plus flatness control system specifically designed for rolling oil management, as well as high-efficiency cooling strategies. This will enable the production of first-class quality copper and copper alloy strip.

The new rolling mill will expand Winjoy’s product portfolio and manufacturing flexibility, particularly to meet the growing demand for wide copper strip in sectors such as electronics, new energy vehicles, and high-end manufacturing.

Winjoy is carrying out this investment within the framework of a lifecycle partnership with SMS group. In fact, SMS group had already received an order from Winjoy in June 2025 for two six-high CVC® finishing mills with a 650 mm roll diameter. These orders marked the beginning of cooperation between the two companies, while the new contract signals a deeper and more sustainable partnership.

Winjoy Chairman Wang Jianli emphasized SMS group’s technical expertise, stating: “SMS group’s technical expertise and equipment capabilities are widely recognized. We look forward to further deepening our cooperation based on mutual trust and benefit. With SMS group’s support, we believe Winjoy will achieve greater success.”

Peter Langner, CEO of SMS group China, highlighted the significance of the agreement, saying: “Today’s signing is more than a contract. It is the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership in copper rolling technology. Together with the previously ordered two finishing mills and this comprehensive modernization project, Winjoy and SMS are building one of the most advanced copper strip production lines in China.”

The modernization of the 1,250 mm six-high CVC® copper strip rolling mill represents SMS group’s approach to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions. By upgrading existing equipment with the latest technology, the company enhances production efficiency and product quality while supporting customers in achieving their strategic goals. The project also demonstrates SMS group’s expertise in copper rolling technology and its capability to convert second-hand equipment into high-performance assets, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution.
