SMS Group and Future Forgeworks announce to build Australia's first sustainable CMT plant

Australia-based steel producer Future Forgeworks has partnered with SMS Group to build the country's first CMT® 350 technology plant.

SMS Group and Future Forgeworks announce to build Australia's first sustainable CMT plant

The Swanbank Green Steel Mill project in Brisbane will produce rebar with low carbon emissions and high efficiency. CMT® technology transfers liquid steel directly into a high-speed caster, eliminating the need for traditional fossil fuel reheat furnaces and reducing CO₂ emissions by 30%, while Future Forgeworks is expected to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 90% compared to current local production.

SMS Group is undertaking the engineering and procurement of the entire facility and aims to increase production efficiency with advanced automation and digital technologies. Following regulatory approvals, construction will begin in early 2025 and the plant is planned to be fully operational by the end of 2027. The project will include an electric arc furnace, a fume treatment plant with a capacity of 350,000 tons, a ladle furnace, caster and a rolling mill.

Future Forgeworks Managing Director Rohan Richardson stated, "We are proud to partner with SMS Group. This project is a big step towards our goal of building Australia's first green steel mill." Bernhard Steenken, CSO of SMS Group APAC & MEA, added: “This partnership will ensure that Australia is at the forefront of sustainable steel production.”
