A Sheffield foundry is facing a fourfold increase in energy prices.
In Sheffield, a source close to Liberty Steel, which has massive facilities in Stocksbridge and Rotherham, energy costs "definitely need to be addressed" said.
The firm is set to restart two giant electric arc furnaces in Rotherham after a £50m cash injection.
Dave Dalton, CEO of the Chapeltown-based British Glass Manufacturers Association, said that some companies are days away from stopping production.
“Some businesses have seen their energy bills go up to eight times, which means millions of pounds of extra overhead per month, and that can't go on.
A glass furnace needs constant operation because of the high temperatures required to melt the raw materials and this process cannot be stopped without significant cost and damage to the furnace.” said.
