Salzgitter to replace lining of blast furnace A

The German steel manufacturer Salzgitter will replace the lining of blast furnace A in the summer of 2023, and maintenance will probably continue until September.

The company also plans to restart blast furnace C, which has been idle since 2019, in May 2023. Salzgitter has not yet responded to the question of whether blast furnace A will remain in operation after maintenance is completed.

Salzgitter Executive Director Gunnar Grebler said: "We are restarting blast furnace C in May. Once blast furnace A is back in operation, we will see whether we can support the operation of blast furnace C."

As a further measure to maintain the stability of production volumes throughout the service life of one of the blast furnaces, the company will produce slabs in advance and store them on site from fall 2022. In addition, the Duisburg plant owned by Salzgitter, Thyssenkrupp Steel and Vallourec will be able to use slabs from Hüttenwerke Krupp-Mannesmann (HKM).

The move comes ahead of the company's long-term transition to low-carbon technologies, which will eventually lead to the abandonment of blast furnaces in favor of direct reduction iron plants and electric arc furnaces.
