Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently commissioned the INS Dunagiri stealth frigate, the INS Agray shallow-water anti-submarine warfare vessel, and the INS Sanshodhak large survey vessel into the Indian Navy during a ceremony held at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata.
The vessels, designed by the Indian Navy Warship Design Bureau and built by Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), are expected to provide significant operational capabilities in naval combat, hydrographic surveys, and anti-submarine warfare.
SAIL stated that these vessels will enhance blue-water operations, improve maritime domain awareness, and contribute to the protection of coastal waters against emerging threats.
INS Dunagiri equipped with advanced weapon systems
The INS Dunagiri, the fifth stealth frigate built under Project 17A, has been equipped with advanced weapon and sensor systems, including BrahMos anti-ship missiles and a medium-range surface-to-air missile system, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy’s combat capabilities.
Meanwhile, INS Agray, the fourth vessel in the Arnala-class shallow-water anti-submarine warfare ships, is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launch systems, and sonar systems capable of detecting and neutralizing underwater threats in shallow waters.
SAIL emphasized that it continues to support India’s domestic defense industry and naval modernization program through the supply of specialized defense-grade steel.
