Russian steel giant MMK plans RUB 10.2 billion environmental investment

Russian steel giant MMK Group (Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works) plans to allocate RUB 10.2 billion (approximately USD 127 million) for environmental investments in 2025. Of this amount, RUB 9.9 billion will be funded by the parent company.

Russian steel giant MMK plans RUB 10.2 billion environmental investment

Under the approved 2025 Environmental Program, the company will implement comprehensive projects at both its main facilities and subsidiaries.

Key Modernization Projects

MMK aims to carry out a total of 25 environmental measures and 7 projects within its group companies this year. The largest portion of the investment, RUB 2.6 billion (approximately USD 32.3 million), will be directed to modernizing the coke production unit and constructing environmental protection structures.

Additionally, RUB 1.8 billion (approximately USD 22.4 million) will go toward modernizing blast furnace production. The company plans to replace the hot stove units of five blast furnaces by 2027.

Waste management is also part of the 2025 targets. MMK will process 7.5 million tons of existing and waste metallurgical slag, using at least 1.8 million tons of recycled material for sinter plant charging.

Green Spaces and Biodiversity Efforts

MMK continues its initiatives to preserve natural habitats. Last year, the company planted 5,655 trees and shrubs on its premises and created 1,473 green areas in Magnitogorsk.

Plans for 2025 include rehabilitating 7 hectares at the West Mine of Magnitnaya Mountain and completing the next phase of a fish stocking project in the Magnitogorsk Reservoir. In October, the company will release 50,000 carp, 40,000 mirror carp, and 3,500 zander into the reservoir.

Through these implemented and planned projects, MMK aims not only to achieve its sustainability goals but also to contribute to improving air quality in the city of Magnitogorsk.
