Russian steel exports growth was limited in May

Argus said that Russia's export rail steel shipments increased in May compared to a year ago, limiting the flow of cheap Russian steel to overseas markets as the main reason for the decline in Turkish steel and scrap prices in recent months.

Steel deliveries by rail to export terminals in Russia account for the vast majority of port material, although they do not fully reflect the country's total exports.

According to Argus analysis, hot rolled coil export rail deliveries to Turkey in May reached 167,753 tons, up 2.9% from 162,864 tons in May 2021, according to Russian rail customs. In May, Russian hot rolled steel was to be exported to other countries, more than half of which was sent to Uzbekistan and Belarus, and therefore did not compete with Turkey or other global steel exporters.

According to official customs data, the total volume of hot rolled steel exports from Russia in the second half of 2021 averaged 563,616 tons per month. As of May 2021, export rail transport from Russia amounted to 440,921 tons.

Russia's steel billet export rail transport in May totaled 475,966 tons, up 1.8% from May 2021.

May export shipments to Turkey reached 50,386 tons, up 16.8% from 41,915 tons in May 2021. The blank was sold to Turkey in April-May.

In May, an additional 425,580 tons of export billet were shipped from Russia, of which 373,002 tons were shipped to Switzerland, Taiwan and Kazakhstan, indicating a limited direct impact on billet sales opportunities in Turkey.
