Outokumpu and Alstom collaborate on low-emission steel

Sustainable stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu and Alstom, a provider of intelligent transportation solutions, have collaborated on the supply of stainless steel with a low carbon footprint.

Outokumpu and Alstom collaborate on low-emission steel

Under the agreement, Outokumpu's Circle Green®, which provides up to 93% lower carbon emissions, will be used in Alstom's Metropolis metro cars. The first delivery is scheduled for 2026.

The partnership is in line with both companies' Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) commitments and aims to support the European Union's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Rolf Schencking, President for Business Line Advanced Materials at Outokumpu, stated: "Staying competitive and accelerating the green transformation is critical for Europe's future. Stainless steel is a material that plays a key role in low-emission transportation solutions and underpins technological developments. This collaboration with Alstom is our largest volume Circle Green agreement in the mobility sector and we are proud that it will be used in our first metro project in Europe."

Developed in parallel with rapidly increasing urbanization and the need for sustainable transportation, this collaboration also supports Alstom's goal of reducing its supply chain emissions by 30% by 2030. Circle Green will be used in the outer layers of Alstom's subway cars.

Véronique Andriès, Sustainability and CSR Vice President at Alstom, added: "This collaboration is fully in line with the eco-design approach we have long adopted in our product and service designs. The use of a material with lower carbon emissions compared to standard steel will make a tangible contribution to our efforts to reduce our emissions."

Outokumpu's Circle Green® is the first stainless steel worldwide to reduce its carbon footprint on this scale and to offer a product-based footprint calculation for each delivery. Today, more than 40 companies in Europe and Asia aim to reduce their carbon emissions with this solution.
