Oman to launch first green ship recycling hub in the Middle East

Oman will establish the region’s first integrated green ship recycling facility in the Khatmat Malaha area of North Batinah. The project will be implemented in partnership with Green Wheel Recycling Middle East, with a concession agreement expected to be signed this month to start construction.

The facility will include a port capable of dismantling and recycling more than 70 ships each year. In its initial phase, it is expected to produce around 2 million tonnes of low-carbon steel. The project also aims to support international shipping fleets in adopting environmentally responsible recycling practices in line with regulations such as the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong Convention.

The facility is projected to create approximately 2,000 jobs and supply low-carbon steel to Oman’s iron and steel sectors. It will also support related industries, including eco-friendly container manufacturing.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) noted that the facility will provide electricity and green fuel to ships while docked, marking a step toward more sustainable maritime operations in the region.
