Speaking at a press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum stated that the meeting took place on Tuesday after Trump cut short his participation in the G7 Summit in Canada due to the crisis in the Middle East.
Sheinbaum emphasized the need for a more solid framework for bilateral relations, noting the large number of Mexicans living in the United States. “I proposed a general agreement covering security, migration and trade,” Sheinbaum stated, adding that she also stressed the importance of recognizing Mexican families who have been living in the US for a long time and contributing to the country's economy.
The Mexican leader highlighted the progress made in border security, saying that the border is now “much more secure” and that there has been a “significant decrease” in migrant crossings.
Sheinbaum also added that Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard will travel to the US on Friday to discuss trade issues, while security and migration issues will be discussed at the US State Department.
Sheinbaum stated that she met with Trump for the seventh time in her second term in office and described the meeting as “good”. Sheinbaum also noted that Trump apologized for not being able to attend the G7 meetings and noted that Trump had invited him to Washington, but that this visit would take place at a later date.
