Metal Logic establishes strategic platform for low-emission steel in Pilbara

Australia-based Metal Logic has acquired a strategic site in Western Australia's iron-ore-rich Pilbara region to implement its "smelting as a service" model. The company aims to produce low-emission steel using its modular and scalable array melting technology.

Metal Logic establishes strategic platform for low-emission steel in Pilbara

Chief Executive Officer Joel Nicholls announced that the platform will initially launch with an annual capacity of 1 million tonnes using industrial-scale technology developed in Australia, followed by increased mass production via Melbourne. This technology enables the processing of lower-grade ores, extends mine life, and provides cost advantages to local producers. This will usher in new jobs and a period of regional resilience.

Nicholls confirmed that the Pilbara site is just 20 kilometres from key railway lines that transport a large portion of the iron ore to the coast. "Metal Logic plans to bring our 'clean steel' solution to market by deploying its modular and scalable smelting facility at this location," he said.

The platform enables the processing of low-grade iron ore, allowing operations to continue in previously uneconomical deposits and freeing up maintenance-requiring areas. “We are expanding our team and seeking individuals with the skills needed for our next phase of deployment. We are currently evaluating idle iron ore resources requiring maintenance,” Nicholls said.

Economic and Environmental Advantages

Metal Logic’s technology lowers costs and reduces emissions by focusing on thermodynamic efficiency and is economically viable without the need for government subsidies. Nicholls said the platform aims to create regional added value by unlocking idle mineral resources and redirect taxpayer funds to other priorities such as education, healthcare, and manufacturing.

The company also enjoys strong support from steel and iron ore industry leaders. This support reinforces the strategic importance of the Pilbara field’s proximity to railways and the port of Port Hedland.

A New Era in the Steel Value Chain

Nicholls stated that Metal Logic’s approach aims to eliminate the inefficiencies of traditional blast furnaces in steelmaking. While current methods consume approximately 7.5 gigajoules of energy per tonne, Metal Logic's technology operates more efficiently, offers the opportunity to process idle ore and reduces CO2 emissions.
