Merafe Resources experiences decrease in ferrochrome production

South Africa-based ferrochrome producer Merafe Resources announced its production results for the first half of 2024. According to company data, ferrochrome production in the January-June period of 2024 decreased by 16.7% to 154,000 tons compared to the same period of 2023.

Merafe Resources experiences decrease in ferrochrome production

It was stated that this decrease in production was due to the current market conditions and the non-operation of the Rustenburg plant in 2024. The inability to commission the Rustenburg plant on time led to a significant shortfall in production capacity and affected the company's total production figures.

In addition to the production reduction, Merafe Resources announced that it will develop various strategies to adapt to market conditions and increase operational efficiency. The company stated that they aim to increase production capacity in the long term and to better respond to demand fluctuations in the sector.

As ferrochrome is a critical component in the production of stainless steel, this production decrease could have far-reaching effects on the global steel industry.
