Lulea Harbour will be the main centre of H2 Green Steel

H2 Green Steel announced on 30 May that it will use the Swedish port of Lulea as the primary logistics and shipping hub for its new steel mill in Boden in northern Sweden.

Lulea Harbour will be the main centre of H2 Green Steel

"This new co-operation agreement with the Port of Lulea is another important piece of our puzzle in making our green steel mill in Boden a success," said Jenny Marin, Logistics Category Manager at H2 Green Steel.

"We have been working very closely with the City of Lulea and the Port of Lulea since day one of our launch. Thanks to good co-operation and a shared vision, we now have a clear plan for our next steps."

H2 Green Steel aims to start green steel production in Boden by the end of 2025, using renewable energy and ferrous scrap and direct reduced iron as the main input.

By 2030, the port of Lulea aims to have three to four times more goods handling capacity compared to its current 8 million mt/year capacity.

H2 Green Steel was founded in 2020 with the aim of accelerating the decarbonisation of the steel industry using green hydrogen. The company is building an integrated green hydrogen plant at the Boden steel plant, and production is planned to start in 2025 and reach 5 million mt/year of high-quality steel by 2030.
