Low steel production in Europe affected global steel production

Global crude steel production decreased by 1.1% y-o-y to 943.9 million tonnes in the first half of 2023 due to lower production in Europe and the Americas, according to data released by the World Steel Association.

Production in China, the world's largest producer and consumer of the metal, increased by 1.3% to 535.6 metric tonnes in the January-June period, the data showed.

In a statement, it was said that some Chinese steel mills were instructed to keep this year's production at the same level as 2022.

China's 2023 steel production is expected to remain around 1 billion tonnes for the fourth consecutive year.

Steel production outside China will increase in the second half of the year and amount to 847 million tonnes, up 3.6% from 2022.

The World Steel Association also announced that first-half production in sanctions-hit Russia, the world's fifth-largest producer, is estimated to have increased by 1% to 37.5 million tonnes.
