At the First Transport Trade and Export Forum in Aktau, Kazakhstan, earlier this week, officials from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan gathered to discuss the ambitious construction of a new railway line. The line would connect Turgundi, Herat, Kandahar and Spin Boldak, stretching from Turkmenistan's western border through Afghanistan to Pakistan and on to India.
Mammetkhan Chakyev, Head of the Agency for Transport and Communications under Turkmenistan's Cabinet of Ministers, advocated for joint involvement in the project. He revealed that Turkmenistan has already collaborated with Afghan counterparts to establish a logistics center in Turgundi, with construction set to commence soon. This center aims to facilitate the transshipment of grain, containers, and other cargo, significantly increasing cargo turnover from Turgundi.
Chakyev underscored Kazakhstan's pivotal role in the project, praising its expertise in producing high-quality railway tracks. He noted that Kazakhstan's participation could greatly enhance the railway corridor's attractiveness and overall efficiency.
Afghan representatives reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring smooth transit of goods through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to Pakistan. They also expressed interest in importing Chinese goods via these routes, recognizing the corridor's potential benefits for all involved parties.
Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin welcomed the proposals, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in developing the western corridor through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India.
