KARDEMİR started preliminary surveys at new mining sites

Karabük Iron and Steel Factories (KARDEMİR) has officially started preliminary studies after winning the right to operate in 11 mining sites in Balıkesir, Kütahya, Sivas and Kırıkkale.

KARDEMİR started preliminary surveys at new mining sites

According to a statement released by the factory, KARDEMİR, which has prioritized domestic resources since its establishment, purchases all of the coking coal produced by the Turkish Hard Coal Corporation (TTK) in Zonguldak and a large portion of the energy coal produced in the Amasra district of Bartın. It was also emphasized that KARDEMİR is the largest user of domestic iron ores extracted from provinces such as Kayseri, Sivas, Kırıkkale, Balıkesir, Bingöl, Erzincan, Elazığ and Malatya.

It was stated that KARDEMİR continues its researches on mining operations in its own license areas and won the right to operate 11 mining sites in Balıkesir, Kütahya, Sivas and Kırıkkale in the tenders opened by the General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs (MAPEG) in September. It was shared that the preliminary survey studies initiated for the determination of reserves in these fields are continuing rapidly. It was stated that these mining sites have copper, gold and polymetal potential in addition to iron ore and cover an area of 11 thousand 939 hectares.

KARDEMİR aims to increase efficiency in all production processes, decrease costs and offer higher value to its stakeholders in line with its sustainable growth targets, the statement added, emphasizing that raw material supply security is of great importance for the factory. In this context, it was stated that efforts towards private mining operations are one of KARDEMİR's strategic priorities.

The following statements were made in the statement: “While establishing long-term ore connections with our existing suppliers, we are exploring on-site ore enrichment investments and simultaneously conducting mining operations in our license areas. This process contributes positively to our logistics activities, decreasing our transportation costs, increasing our operational efficiency and creating new jobs by contributing to the regional workforce through the operation of local mining sites.”

It was also reminded that KARDEMİR has a 10% shareholding in Erdemir Madencilik Sanayi ve Ticaret AŞ, which is located in Sivas and has discovered a gold mine in recent months.
