John Cockerill wins process line contract for India electric steel project

John Cockerill has been awarded a major contract by JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Limited (JVML) for a Cold Rolled Non-Oriented (CRNO) electrical steel project to be developed in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, India. The scope includes the design, engineering, supply, supervision of installation, and commissioning of two Annealing and Coating Lines (ACL 2 and ACL 3) as well as one Annealing and Pickling Line (APL).

John Cockerill wins process line contract for India electric steel project

With an annual production capacity of approximately 600,000 tons, the project represents a significant milestone for John Cockerill in the field of electrical steel processing lines in India, further strengthening its position as a global technology provider of advanced steel processing solutions.

The contract covers engineering, manufacturing, equipment supply, installation supervision, commissioning, and operator training. The project is scheduled for completion in 2028.

The project will be executed under the leadership of John Cockerill in close collaboration with Fives Stein. By combining the expertise of both companies, the project aims to meet the specific requirements of electrical steel production as well as JVML’s performance expectations.

Frédéric Martin, Managing Director of John Cockerill India Limited, emphasized that the contract represents a major milestone for the company in India. He stated that this is not only the company’s first electrical steel project in the country but also a reflection of strong confidence in its technology, engineering expertise, and execution capabilities. He also highlighted that demand for electrical steel continues to increase due to electric mobility, renewable energy, and industrial electrification, expressing pride in supporting JVML in establishing world-class production capabilities that contribute to India’s industrial growth and energy transition.

The new CRNO project’s Annealing and Pickling Line (APL) is designed to restore ductility and ensure superior surface cleanliness, forming the basis for achieving the required final magnetic properties in subsequent annealing and coating processes. The line will operate at a speed of 80 meters per minute and will process hot rolled non-oriented (NGO) electrical steel with up to 4% silicon content.

The line will include equipment such as strip preheating, edge heaters, a slitting unit with scrap chopper, a horizontal annealing furnace, four turbulent pickling tanks, two shot blasting machines, advanced process control systems, a hydrochloric acid (HCl) regeneration system, and a silica sludge removal system.

The Annealing and Coating Lines (ACL) will perform the final processing stage, ensuring magnetic properties and insulation coating quality that directly affect motor and transformer efficiency. These lines will operate at a speed of 180 meters per minute and will process cold rolled NGO electrical steel with up to 4% silicon content. The lines will be equipped with cleaning sections, horizontal annealing furnaces, organic coating solution circulation systems, varnish drying and curing units, a floating cooling furnace, edge trimming machines with scrap shredders, and drum shears.
