Jindal Steel Duqm’s 5 million ton green DRI complex enters critical installation phase

A significant milestone has been achieved in the Jindal Steel Duqm project in Oman, as it moves further along its development timeline. A 935 ton reactor, which forms the core of the direct reduced iron (DRI) process, has arrived at Duqm Port, marking the transition into the equipment installation phase.

Jindal Steel Duqm’s 5 million ton green DRI complex enters critical installation phase

The total investment of the green steel complex is approximately USD 3 billion, and the first phase of the project is planned to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027.

The facility will utilize Energiron Zero Reformer technology developed in partnership with Tenova and Danieli. The plant will have a total annual capacity of 5 million tons, consisting of two DRI modules with 2.5 million tons capacity each. It is expected to achieve a metallization rate of 94% and operate with carbon dioxide emissions approximately 85% lower than the global average. The system is also designed to be ready for up to 80% hydrogen utilization without requiring any major modifications.

The delivery of the 935 ton reactor by Kanoo Shipping marks the transition from construction activities to the mechanical installation phase. Chief Executive Officer Harssha Shetty stated that all long lead equipment orders have been placed and contractor payments have been completed. As part of the project scope, a second DRI module has been ordered from Danieli to expand capacity to 5 million tons. This unit will include an optional Hytemp system, enabling hot DRI to be fed directly into the electric arc furnace (EAF) at temperatures above 600 degrees Celsius.

In addition, a study has been initiated with UK based PeroCycle to integrate a closed loop carbon recycling technology capable of reducing emissions in integrated steel plants by up to 90%.

From a project management perspective, the presence of two identical DRI units reduces technology risk while enabling standardization of spare parts, operator training, and maintenance procedures. With long lead equipment procurement completed, the project’s critical path has shifted to mechanical installation and commissioning activities. As part of Oman government support for green steel investments, a residential complex consisting of 500 housing units valued at USD 78 million is being developed for Jindal employees. The facility is also designed to transition from natural gas usage to 100% green hydrogen in the future.
