Jindal Steel has completed the world’s longest road constructed entirely using processed steel slag in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India.
According to a company statement published by The New Indian Express, the 1.85 km four lane road connects Jindal Steel’s Raigarh facility to National Highway 49. Designed to accommodate heavy commercial vehicles and loaded trucks, the road was built using approximately 200,000 mt of steel slag.
No natural stone aggregate used
Processed steel slag was used instead of natural stone aggregate in every layer of the road, from the foundation to the upper bituminous surface. The initiative aims to reduce the need for natural stone extraction and reuse industrial byproducts generated during steel production.
According to the statement, the steel slag was processed through multiple stages of crushing, magnetic metal separation and precise grading to produce high strength aggregate.
The project was developed in cooperation with Jindal Steel, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).
Road built approximately %35 thinner
According to Jindal Steel, the road was built approximately %35 thinner than conventional bituminous roads while reducing construction costs by around %40. The road was designed to withstand heavy traffic from commercial vehicles.
Guinness World Records officials reportedly evaluated the technical data, materials used and road specifications through field inspections and verified the record.
The road was inaugurated during a virtual ceremony attended by Indian Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and Jindal Steel Chairman Naveen Jindal.
As part of the project, Jindal Steel also introduced the “Steel Grit” brand for processed steel slag aggregate. An agreement was also signed to promote the use of the technology in other national and regional road projects.
