As part of the project, JFE Steel will cooperate with energy companies that are members of the DeepStar consortium, including ExxonMobil and Occidental Petroleum from the US, Shell and BP from the UK, TotalEnergies from France, Woodside Energy from Australia, and Petrobras from Brazil.
The main objective of the project is to develop evaluation methods and acceptance criteria for steel pipe materials to be used in CO₂ transportation pipelines. The project aims to contribute to the safe and reliable development of pipelines for transporting captured CO₂ to storage sites.
Impact of impurities in CO₂ to be examined
Various impurities contained in captured CO₂ during transportation can affect the performance and integrity of steel materials used in pipelines. In this context, JFE Steel will conduct material tests at its Steel Research Laboratory in Chiba, Japan, using environments that simulate CO₂ transportation conditions.
The tests will evaluate the effects of impurities on the strength and fracture resistance of steel pipe materials. Based on the results, the project will contribute to developing material requirements and evaluation methods for CO₂ transportation pipelines and validating the applicability of these methods.
Through the project, JFE Steel aims to develop safety assessment technologies that take into account the effects of impurities and support technical efforts aimed at implementing CCS infrastructure.
