JFE Steel commissions new electric arc furnace for low-carbon stainless steel production

JFE Steel has commissioned a new electric arc furnace at its East Japan Works Chiba District plant in Japan.

JFE Steel commissions new electric arc furnace for low-carbon stainless steel production

It was reported that the investment, implemented in line with the company’s low-carbon transformation targets in stainless steel production, amounts to approximately 15 billion yen.

With the commissioning of the facility, the company aims to significantly increase scrap usage in stainless steel production while reducing the use of traditional blast furnace-based hot metal.

Through the investment, JFE Steel’s scrap melting capacity has been significantly increased. The company’s existing capacity has been expanded sixfold to 300,000 tons annually. This increase is expected to improve resource efficiency by enabling the use of more recycled raw materials in production.

Regarding the environmental impact of the new facility, it was stated that annual greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by approximately 450,000 tons. This reduction is expected to directly contribute to lowering the company’s carbon footprint.
