Japan's tariff message to the US: No common ground, demand for review continues

Japanese Prime Minister Isiba Shigeru stated that a compromise has not yet been reached in the customs tariff negotiations with the US and expressed dissatisfaction with the 25 % US tariff applied to some auto parts.

Japan's tariff message to the US: No common ground, demand for review continues

Prime Minister Ishiba made a statement regarding tariffs following a meeting with Akazawa Ryosei, the Japanese government official responsible for negotiations with the United States. After the meeting, Ishiba emphasized that not only automobile parts but also products like steel and aluminum are on the negotiation agenda.

Meanwhile, Japan's chief negotiator Akazawa Ryosei also stated that various customs tariff measures are being re-evaluated with the U.S. "If this issue is not handled properly, reaching an agreement will not be possible," he said.

Officials pointed to the 24% tariff imposed on Japan during the Trump administration, noting that despite a 90-day exemption period granted to countries other than China, the tariffs have negatively impacted Japan's industry.

The Japanese side acknowledges that reaching common ground in the negotiations may take time, but insists that dialogue must continue.
