Algoma Steel temporarily suspends EAF production due to power outage

Canadian steel producer Algoma Steel Group announced that it has temporarily suspended electric arc furnace (EAF) production due to an unplanned outage at the Lake Superior Power (LSP) power facility.

Algoma Steel temporarily suspends EAF production due to power outage

The company expects the outage to last no longer than 21 days, while stating that EAF production could resume in approximately 10 days if an alternative electricity supply is secured.

According to Algoma Steel, one of the turbine units at the LSP facility was automatically shut down after an abnormal condition was detected. The other units at the facility remain operational.

While the company’s technical teams assess the condition of the equipment and the necessary repair work, some maintenance activities originally scheduled for a later date have also been brought forward in order to mitigate the impact of the outage.

Alternative Electricity Supply Being Evaluated

Algoma Steel is working with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) of Ontario on alternative electricity supply options to enable EAF production to resume earlier.

If an alternative power source is secured, EAF operations are expected to restart within approximately 10 days.

The company has also taken steps to bring a spare turbine into operation under its long-term service agreement with GE Vernova. Based on current assessments, the outage is expected not to exceed 21 days, depending on the commissioning of the spare turbine.

Shipment Volumes May Be Affected

Although EAF production has been temporarily suspended, operations in Algoma Steel’s downstream production processes continue.

The company stated that, thanks to current inventory levels and its order position, it does not expect significant disruptions to customer delivery schedules. However, the outage could affect shipment volumes in the coming period.

Algoma Steel noted that assessments of the equipment’s condition, the repair schedule, and the operational and financial impacts of the outage are ongoing, and that further updates will be provided as developments occur.

The company continues its transition to electric arc furnace technology for steel production, with the modernization expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 70%.
