Japan's steel industry urges the government to close anti‑dumping

The Japan Iron and Steel Federation and other industry organizations have urgently called on the government to establish a system to close the regulatory gaps that allow Chinese-origin steel to circumvent anti-dumping duties.

Japan's steel industry urges the government to close anti‑dumping

Industry representatives emphasized that measures are becoming increasingly urgent in response to the growing pressure from rising steel exports from China to Japan. The Federation and related organizations highlighted that commonly used methods to evade duties include routing products through third countries and subjecting them to only minimal processing.

The Japanese government is currently examining the necessity of imposing anti-dumping duties on certain products, including hot-dip galvanized steel sheets originating from China. However, industry groups argue that without addressing the existing regulatory deficiencies, such duties will not be effective.

The statement also pointed out that among G20 countries, only Japan and Indonesia currently lack a system to prevent circumvention of anti-dumping measures.
