Japan's Kobe Steel to supply Kobenable steel to China

Kobe Steel, one of Japan's leading steel manufacturers, has revealed plans to supply its Kobenable® Steel to Tsuneishi Group (Zhoushan) Shipbuilding Inc., the Chinese subsidiary of Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. This steel will be utilized in the construction of a 5,900 TEU methanol-fueled container carrier, marking the first instance of Kobenable® Steel being used outside Japan.

Launched in 2022, Kobenable® Steel, known for its potential to reduce carbon emissions during the blast furnace process, will be produced at Kobe Steel's Kakogawa Works and Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant. This collaboration represents a key milestone in the development of more sustainable shipbuilding practices, aligning with the global push to lower the maritime industry's carbon footprint.

The vessel under construction at Tsuneishi Group’s Chinese facility will be the company’s first methanol-fueled container carrier, highlighting a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
