Japan’s crude steel production declined by 0.3% in the first seven months of the year

Japan’s crude steel production decreased by 0.3% year-on-year to 47.3 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2026. In July, production increased by 0.4% year-on-year to 6.9 million tonnes.

According to data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), Japan’s total crude steel production in the January–July 2026 period decreased by 0.3% to 47.3 million tonnes. With production of 47.3 million tonnes in the first seven months of the year, Japan ranked as the world’s fourth-largest crude steel producer.

Japan Becomes the World’s 4th Largest Producer

In July, China was the world’s largest crude steel producer, with 76.9 million tonnes. China’s production decreased by 3.6% year-on-year.

China was followed by India with 14.4 million tonnes and the US with 7.4 million tonnes. Japan ranked fourth with 6.9 million tonnes of crude steel production.

Following Japan, Russia and South Korea each produced 5.7 million tonnes, while Türkiye produced 3.4 million tonnes of crude steel.

Japan’s Seven-Month Production Reaches 47.3 Million Tonnes

Japan’s crude steel production decreased by 0.3% to 47.3 million tonnes in the January–July 2026 period. With this production level, Japan ranked as the world’s fourth-largest crude steel producer in the first seven months of the year, following China, India and the US.

During the same period, China’s crude steel production stood at 577 million tonnes, India’s at 101.1 million tonnes, and the US’s at 50.2 million tonnes.

Production in Asia and Oceania Declines

Crude steel production in the Asia and Oceania region decreased by 1.2% year-on-year to 109.4 million tonnes in July 2026. The region’s total production in the January–July 2026 period decreased by 0.9% to 799.6 million tonnes.

Despite Japan’s 0.4% increase in crude steel production in July, the country’s production in the first seven months of the year declined by 0.3%.
