According to statements issued by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Finance, the investigation covers hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils, plates, and strip products.
Domestic producers filed dumping allegations
The investigation was launched following petitions submitted by Japan’s leading steel producers, Nippon Steel, JFE Steel, and Kobe Steel. The companies alleged that the products in question were being sold in the Japanese market at prices below their “normal value.”
It was reported that the petition regarding hot-rolled coil products was submitted by Nippon Steel, JFE Steel, Kobe Steel, and Nakayama Steel Works, while the petition concerning cold-rolled coil products was filed by Nippon Steel, JFE Steel, and Kobe Steel.
Authorities stated that the applications were submitted on February 27 and that the anti-dumping investigation is, in principle, expected to be completed within one year.
Protectionist trend strengthens in the global steel market
The statement emphasized that the decision comes at a time when pressures are increasing in the global steel market due to excess capacity and weak demand. It noted that China’s rising exports, driven by weak domestic demand, have intensified competition in international markets, prompting many countries to adopt trade defense measures.
It was also recalled that Japan has previously conducted similar investigations into certain coated and stainless steel products originating from China, South Korea, and Taiwan.
