According to the data compiled by SteelRadar from the Italian Steelmakers' Association Federacciai, the increase in March lagged behind the 2.6% rise in February and the 1.8% rise in January, signaling a loss of momentum in production.
In the first quarter of the year, total crude steel production reached 5.6 million tonnes, representing a 1.5% increase compared to the same period last year. Thus, the sector continued its growth, albeit limited, in the first quarter of 2025.
A clear divergence was observed based on product groups in March. Long rolled product production reached 1.3 million tonnes, recording a 8.6% year-on-year increase. In this segment, the total for the first quarter of the year was 3.4 million tonnes, with a growth rate of 8.5%, maintaining its strong course.
In contrast, flat rolled product production remained at 818,000 tonnes in March, declining by 10.3% year-on-year. In the first three months of the year, flat product production was recorded as 2.3 million tonnes, continuing its weak outlook with a 6.7% decrease.
