Induction furnace to be banned in Thailand

Thailand's Industry Minister Akanat Promphan announced that the controversial Xin Ke Yuan Steel Co Ltd. will permanently revoke the operating licenses of its steel mills in Thailand and ban the use of induction furnace (IF) technology nationwide.

Legal Violations Lead to Plant Closure

Minister Akanat stated that Xin Ke Yuan Steel will be investigated by Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for several legal violations, which will end the company's business activities in Thailand. "Even if Xin Ke Yuan Steel has other projects, it will no longer be able to open a factory or do any business here,".

Substandard Steel Products Linked to Building Collapse

Xin Ke Yuan's factory in Ban Khai district of Rayong province was temporarily shut down after inspections by the Ministry of Industry found that the steel produced was of sub-industry standard quality. The company's steel was also used in the construction of the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) building. While steel was not the main cause of the collapse, it was cited as a contributing factor.

Factory Closures and Additional Investigations

Last week, tests on samples taken from the collapsed building showed that the steel did not meet industry standards, strengthening the case for keeping the Ban Khai plant closed. Another Xin Ke Yuan factory in Pluak Daeng district remains closed due to a construction crane accident. Minister Akanat emphasized that the company continues to crack down on illegal activities and will be prosecuted for a number of legal violations.
