According to provisional data released by India's Ministry of Coal, the country's coal production increased from 64.88 million mt in July last year to 69.75 million mt in the same month this year.
Coal dispatches also recorded strong performance, increasing from 73.57 million mt in July last year to 86.33 million mt this year.
The increase in production and dispatches was mainly driven by higher electricity demand due to below-normal monsoon rainfall. According to official data, electricity consumption in the country increased by approximately %11 year on year to 170.7 billion kilowatt-hours (BU) in June. Rising use of cooling equipment due to hot weather conditions also supported demand.
Coal India, the country's largest coal producer, produced 50.35 million mt of coal in July, accounting for the majority of total production. The company's output increased by %8.42 year on year, while its coal dispatches reached 63.67 million mt during the same period.
