Indian traders buy Chinese steel at a discount

In advance of a seasonal increase in domestic demand, local producers are concerned that Indian traders are actively acquiring Chinese steel at significant discounts.

Indian traders buy Chinese steel at a discount

Indian buyers are drawn to import deals offering hot- and cold-rolled products at discounts of $30–$50 per ton. Following the end of the rainy season, it is anticipated that industrial activity will rise over the following two months in the country.

The traders near the port cities of Gujarat and Odisha think that shipping local products is more expensive than importing steel from China. Chinese electrical steel imports used in power infrastructure and electric motors could further hurt Indian suppliers' market share if it becomes more affordable to buy Chinese steel.

Chinese steel imports, including pipes and sheets used in construction, reached a three-year high in April and May. Cold-rolled products made up about 35% of steel imports from China, followed by pipes. Approximately 68% of China's cold rolled steel cargo arrives at Gujarat Adani Port's Mundra Port.
