Indian Coal and Mining Minister Pralhad Joshi responded in writing to a question on Monday, saying that India aims to produce 1.017 million tons of coal in the period of 2023-24.
The Ministry of Coal and Mining is working in coal mines with mining developers and operators (YTBS) through open global tenders to increase domestic coal production and reduce dependence on imports to the extent possible.
According to Pralhad Joshi, in order to increase production, Coal India Ltd (CIL) has identified 15 projects with a total project rating capacity of 168.58 MTY for implementation through the MDO mode. Out of these 15 projects, nine projects with a total capacity of 126.74 MTY were awarded grant letters (LoA).
In addition, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) is conducting two MDO projects with 29MTY.
According to official data, India's total coal production has increased by 12.94% so far in 2022-23, reaching 607.97 million tons. The efforts made to increase domestic production and shipment have yielded good results.
The government also amended the Mineral Concession Rules under the MMDR Act, 1960, 2021 to allow the tenant of restricted mines to sell coal or lignite up to 50% of the total surplus production after meeting the requirements of the end-use facility.
