India mulling mandatory use of 20 percent recycled metals in vehicle production by 2026-27

India mulling mandatory use of recycled metals in vehicle production by 2026

The Indian government is mulling to make a mandatory regulation to require Indian automobile manufacturers to use 20 percent recycled metals by weight from scrapped vehicles to make new ones from 2026-27 and 2027-28, and the ratio will be increased to 30 percent in 2028.

The decision is part of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) being prepared by the Center.

According to the draft policy, manufacturers will be required to fulfill the EPR obligations, including establishing recycling centers or their own authorized scrapping facility for end-of-life vehicles.
