India expands its raw material supply routes

India will start importing coking coal from Mongolia on a trial basis later this month to diversify its supply and reduce dependence on Australia.

India expands its raw material supply routes

Key steelmakers, including JSW Steel and the state-owned Steel Authority of India (SAIL), are set to receive shipments following months of negotiations.

JSW Steel is expected to receive around 30,000 metric tons, while SAIL is likely to get between 3,000 and 5,000 metric tons. This will be JSW Steel's second shipment from Mongolia, with the first being 8,000 metric tons in 2021.

The coking coal will arrive via Chinese ports, though Indian authorities are exploring alternative routes due to tense India-China relations since a deadly 2020 border clash. Mongolia, rich in mineral resources, is struggling to sell raw materials to countries like India without a viable and reliable route.

Indian steel mills have requested government assistance to establish reliable supply routes from Mongolia, known for its superior grade coking coal.

The initiative underscores India's efforts to secure stable and diverse raw material sources for its steel industry.
