Hyundai Steel partners with DNV on future energy steels

South Korean steel producer Hyundai Steel has signed a cooperation agreement with global classification and certification organization DNV to improve performance verification processes for steel products used in the energy sector and strengthen international certification infrastructure.

Hyundai Steel partners with DNV on future energy steels

On August 10, Hyundai Steel and DNV signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at DNV’s Korea headquarters in Busan titled “Establishment of a Certification System and Joint Technology Development for Future Energy Steels and Welding Technologies.”

Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop technologies to evaluate and verify the performance of steel materials used to transport and store future energy sources.

Reliability of steel and welded joints to be tested

A key focus of the cooperation will be measuring the performance of steel products under actual ship operating conditions and energy storage environments. New testing and evaluation methods will be developed, while the reliability of welded joints will also be verified.

The parties aim to align the evaluation system with international standards and expand the scope of certification for steel products used in the energy sector.

Under the division of responsibilities, Hyundai Steel will conduct testing and analysis of steel products and welded joints using its research infrastructure and material development capabilities.

DNV will support the establishment of evaluation criteria and provide technical consulting based on its expertise in international standards and certification.
