The fully integrated casting and hot rolling facilities supplied by Primetals Technologies have been successfully implemented together with advanced automation systems and digitalization solutions. The investment aims to meet the rapidly increasing steel demand in Vietnam and enable Hoa Phat to enter higher value market segments.
Within the scope of the project, two slab casting machines and one hot strip rolling mill have started production. The new facilities have increased the company’s annual steel production capacity by 5.5 million tons. The production line achieved 1.5 millimeter low carbon steel coil production just six weeks after initial start up, reflecting a fast commissioning process. Primetals Technologies has delivered the Final Acceptance Certificate for the hot rolling mill, while commissioning activities for the casters have also been completed.
The two strand casting machines, with an annual capacity of 6 million tons, produce slabs at casting speeds of up to 2 meters per minute, with a thickness of 230 millimeters and widths ranging from 900 to 1,650 millimeters. The facilities use LevCon for improved mold level control, DynaWidth for flexible width changes, and DynaFlex hydraulic oscillator systems that enhance surface quality.
The hot strip rolling mill, with an annual capacity of 5.5 million tons, produces coils with thicknesses ranging from 1.2 to 25.4 millimeters, widths between 900 and 1,650 millimeters, and weights of up to 36 tons. The rolling mill equipment includes a slab sizing press, two single stand reversing roughing mill stands, a seven stand finishing mill, three down coilers, and laminar cooling systems. The four stands in the finishing mill operate with twin cross technology, enabling improved strip profile control.
To enhance quality and efficiency across the production line, a Process Quality Control system, a production management system, and intelligent digital assistants are in use. The Process Quality Control system performs long term data evaluation across the entire production chain, while the production management system optimizes material logistics and inventory. Operators and maintenance engineers utilize the Asset Life Expert system for condition monitoring processes. The plant also employs closed loop expert systems such as Contour and Flatness Optimizer and the Hot Rolling Mill Guidance Expert.
With an annual crude steel capacity of 8 million tons, Hoa Phat continues to strengthen product quality, efficiency, and flexibility in adapting to changing production conditions through this new investment, ensuring the supply of high quality steel slabs and hot rolled coils across all product categories.
