WSJ: The U.S. discussed a possible attack on Iran

WSJ: The U.S. discussed a possible attack on Iran

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing unnamed U.S. sources, Washington’s stance toward Iran, where protests are ongoing, and recent developments in the country were discussed.

Accordingly, it was alleged that officials from the Trump administration held preliminary discussions on how attacks against Iran could be carried out and which locations could be targeted, should it become necessary to implement the U.S. president’s “threats.”

One official claimed that a large-scale air strike targeting numerous Iranian military sites was among the options discussed.

Another source stated that no consensus had been reached on a course of action and that no military equipment or personnel had been deployed in preparation for a possible attack.

Officials, who described these discussions as “part of routine planning,” argued that there were no immediate signs of an impending attack on Iran.

Donald Trump said they were closely monitoring the ongoing protests in Iran, adding, “I am telling the Iranian leaders this: you’d better not open fire, because we will start firing as well.”

Trump also remarked, “Iran is perhaps looking at freedom like never before.”

Protests in Iran

Protests that began on December 28, 2025, when merchants at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar took to the streets over the sharp depreciation of the local currency against foreign exchange rates and broader economic problems, spread to many cities across the country.

While no official statement has been issued regarding those killed or injured during the demonstrations, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported on January 9 (the 13th day of the protests) that 65 people, including 15 security personnel, had lost their lives, dozens had been injured, and 2,311 people had been detained.

Tasnim News Agency reported that the number of injured police officers had risen to 568, while injuries among members of the militia force (Basij) increased to 66.

Public institutions and vehicles were damaged in incidents across various parts of the country, and a “do not go outside” warning was issued in the capital, Tehran, yesterday.
