Breakthrough technology for the next generation of automobile safety
Today, multiple materials are welded together to create different strength zones in vehicle components. But with this innovative method developed by Volkswagen, these properties can now be achieved from just a single steel plate. Thanks to this special alloy called SIBORA® and a three-step press hardening process, the desired mechanical properties can be achieved in different parts of the part.
This technology not only increases safety, but also offers great benefits in terms of lighter cars, leaner production processes, easier assembly, lower costs and sustainability. The Volkswagen Group is positioning this technology as an important step towards its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
Other projects in the final
The Greenbrier Companies from the USA, InfiniSpring from Finland and Loglogic from the UK also made it to the finals and were awarded the runner-up honor. All finalists were honored at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 8.
About the Swedish Steel Award
The Swedish Steel Award, organized by SSAB, recognizes outstanding achievements in engineering, collaboration and steel innovations. The winners receive a diploma and a special sculpture designed by Jörg Jeschke. In addition, on the occasion of this year's award ceremony, SSAB donated 100,000 Swedish kronor to UNICEF to help provide quality education for children and young people around the world.
This year's award recognizes not only technical excellence in steel, but also a visionary approach towards a more sustainable future.
