US Steel will close No. 1, 2 and 3, the three oldest coke batteries at its Clairton coke plant in Pennsylvania, at the end of March due to numerous violations.
Previous infringements by US Steel have prompted local authorities to take action. The local Ministry of Health issued stern warnings to the company to correct the environmental standard violation.
The shutdown of the batteries could decrease emissions by 15-20% and put in close to 130 jobs for the plant, which will support the company's climate goals. But U.S. Steel said it would reassure its workers without firing.
US Steel recommissioned its Blast Furnace No. 3 at Mon Valley Works, which it closed in September 2022 due to falling demand, in February.
