US steel imports decreased by 4.7% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

US steel imports decreased by 4.7% in the first half of 2025

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced that the US imported a total of 2,246,000 net tons of steel in June 2025, based on preliminary data from the US Census Bureau. Of these imports, 1,643,000 net tons are finished steel products. Compared to May, total steel imports decreased by 9.6%, while finished steel imports decreased by 7.6%.

On a y/d basis, total steel imports in the first half of 2025 decreased by 4.7% compared to the same period in 2024. Imports of finished steel decreased by 7.8% in the same period. In the 12-month period between July 2024 and June 2025, total steel imports decreased by 1.2% and finished steel imports decreased by 1.6% compared to the previous 12-month period.

The share of finished steel imports in the US market was 19% in June and is estimated to be 21% in the first six months of 2025.

Among the major steel products with higher imports in June compared to May, rebar increased by 71%, wire rod by 41%, cut sheets by 26%, standard pipes and hot-dip galvanized sheet and strip by 21%.

In the 12 months from July 2024 to June 2025, imports of tinplate increased by 84%, wire rod by 17% and line pipe by 13% compared to the previous 12-month period.

The top steel suppliers to the US in June 2025 were Brazil, Canada, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam. Imports from Brazil totaled 422,000 net tons, an increase of 5% compared to May. Imports from Canada totaled 343,000 net tons, a decrease of 15%. Imports from Mexico decreased by 35% to 194,000 net tons. Imports from South Korea decreased by 42% to 180,000 net tons. Imports from Vietnam increased by 40% to 136,000 net tons.

On a yearly basis, Canada was the largest supplier to the US in the period between July 2024 and June 2025. Imports from Canada decreased by 13% compared to the previous 12 months to 5,883,000 net tons. Imports from Brazil increased by 4% to 4,565,000 net tons. Imports from Mexico decreased by 12% to 3,353,000 net tons, while imports from South Korea decreased by 3% to 2,742,000 net tons. Germany was among the largest suppliers with a 31% increase to 1,253,000 net tons.
