US steel imports decrease in April

US steel imports decreased by 17.1% in April compared to March.

US steel imports decrease in April

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released provisional US steel import data for April 2025. According to the report, which is based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the country's total steel imports decreased 17.1% from the previous month to 2 million 73 thousand net tons (NT). Final steel imports decreased by 11.8% to 1 million 607 thousand NT.

In the first four months of the year, total steel imports and finished steel imports decreased by 4.4% and 5.1%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. In the 12-month period from May 2024 to April 2025, total imports decreased by 0.7%, while finished steel imports increased by 1.1%. AISI estimated the market share of finished steel imports at 20% in April and the average market share in the first four months of 2025 at 22%.

Import Increase in Some Products Drew Attention

Despite the general drop in April, imports increased in some product groups. Tin plate imports increased by 43% compared to the previous month, while oil country goods (OCTG) and wire rods increased by 26% and 14%, respectively.

Over the past 12 months, imports of tin plate were up 73%, wire rods 14%, sheets and strip all other metallic coated 14%, line pipe 14% and heavy structural shapes 11%.

Canada was the largest supplier of steel to the US in April, with 433 thousand net tons (NT). However, this figure decreased by 13% compared to the previous month. After Canada, the next largest steel importing countries were Brazil with 299 thousand NT (decreased 30%), South Korea with 185 thousand NT ( decreased 27%), Mexico with 156 thousand NT (decreased 60%) and Germany with 120 thousand NT (increased 5%).
