According to data from the U.S. Department of the Treasury dated August 18, more than USD32.265 trillion of the total debt is debt held by the public, while USD7.781 trillion consists of intragovernmental debt.
The U.S. national debt surpassed the USD30 trillion mark at the beginning of 2022. As a result, the country’s debt stock has increased by nearly USD10 trillion in less than five years. The debt stood at USD38.4 trillion at the beginning of 2026 and has risen significantly during the first eight months of the year.
The rapid increase in debt has been driven by several factors, particularly stimulus packages implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, rising interest costs and tax cuts.
The continued rise in U.S. public debt has also renewed discussions over the country’s fiscal outlook amid high interest rates and persistent budget deficits.
