Ukraine's steel production will fall annually in 2022

Ukraine could produce 7.6 million mt of steel and 6.9 million mt of steel products in 2022, of which 4.7 million mt could be exported.

The country's steel production is expected to fall 64.5% from 21.4 million metric tons in 2021 due to the war with Russia.

Ukraine produced 4.24 million mt of steel in the January-May period, most of which preceded the January-February war. According to GMK, in the January-April period, the country's iron ore and iron ore concentrate exports totaled 13 million mt, ferroalloy exports 220,000 mt, pig iron 451,100 mt and semi-finished steel products exports 1.15 million mt.

Mining and steel company Metinvest said in a previous statement that the military conflict, the forced halt of Mariupol-based Azovstal and Ilyich Steel and the loss of control over them reduced Metinvest's presence in the world steel market from 11 million to 2.5 million mt/year. mt/year.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine's largest independent steelworks, which started production gradually in April after a forced shutdown, is now running two of six batteries, a quarter blast furnace, one of six basic oxygen converters and one of three basic oxygen converters. Speaking to S&P Global Commodity Insights, the company spokesperson talked about continuous casting machines, three ingot casting machines and a rolling mill.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih reported in May that it had to suspend several investment projects due to the Russian invasion, including a pellet plant that was originally scheduled to open in late 2023.
