The Global Steel Dynamics Forum, organized by World Steel Dynamics (WSD) and the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) in New York, brought together leading representatives of the global steel industry.
Representing the Turkish steel industry and the Steel Exporters’ Association (ÇİB), Chairman of the Board Uğur Dalbeler and Branch Manager Uygar Tatar attended the event, where current market dynamics, key developments, and strategic expectations for the steel sector were discussed. Speaking as a panelist during the “Global Steel Perspectives” session, Dalbeler highlighted the resilience and adaptability of the Turkish steel industry in the face of shifting global dynamics.
Dalbeler noted that rapid changes in the global economy are not a new phenomenon for Turkish industry, emphasizing that Türkiye has operated under challenging and volatile conditions for many years. He illustrated this by saying, “Imagine driving on a foggy night without headlights. After a while, your eyes begin to adapt.” According to Dalbeler, Turkish industry has learned to live with uncertainty and, as a result, has developed the ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions.
Türkiye is more than just a bridge
Dalbeler stated that Türkiye’s role in the international system cannot be explained solely by its geographical location. Beyond serving as a bridge between East and West or Asia and Europe, he described the country as a strategic energy corridor, a strong logistics hub, and an important actor in regional diplomacy.
He added that the region in which Türkiye is located has historically been characterized by a high degree of dynamism and change, which has strengthened the reflexes of Turkish industry. “The more dynamic your surroundings are, the more you develop your muscles. Operating in such an environment makes you faster in decision-making, quicker in action, and better at identifying opportunities early,” he said, noting that adaptability remains one of the Turkish steel sector’s greatest strengths.
We continue to grow despite challenging conditions
Emphasizing that the Turkish steel industry has grown through numerous global crises over the years, Dalbeler pointed out that the sector has successfully overcome major challenges, including the surge of steel supply from the Black Sea region following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
“The more challenges you face, the stronger you become. The Turkish steel industry has emerged from every difficulty with new capabilities. Even when conditions are not always in our favor, we continue to grow. This demonstrates the resilience of our sector,” he said.
Steel is one of the cornerstones of civilization
Commenting on the future of the steel industry, Dalbeler stressed that steel is not only an economic sector but also a strategic and social necessity. He noted that the steel industry has historically supported cooperation and economic integration among nations and pointed out that the foundations of the European Union were also built through cooperation in the steel sector.
