The inauguration ceremony was held at the Measurement Station located in the Yavuzlu village of Kilis. Within the scope of the project, Türkiye aims to export up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Syria.
"A Symbol of Türkiye–Syria Friendship in Energy"
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Bayraktar stated that Türkiye–Syria relations have entered a new phase in the energy sector, saying:
"We are inaugurating the Türkiye–Syria Natural Gas Pipeline, a symbol of Türkiye–Syria friendship in the energy field. I hope this project brings peace to our region and prosperity to our countries."
The project aims to strengthen Syria’s energy infrastructure as part of its post-war reconstruction efforts. Bayraktar noted that, during meetings with Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir, they discussed technical cooperation opportunities in electricity and natural gas in detail.
Comprehensive Energy Cooperation and Regional Support
Originating from Türkoğlu (Kahramanmaraş), the 36-inch diameter pipeline extends approximately 93 kilometers and reaches the Yavuzlu Measurement Station. The gas is sourced from Azerbaijan and delivered to Syria via Türkiye under a swap agreement. Highlighting the contribution of SOCAR, Azerbaijan's state energy company, Bayraktar remarked that energy collaborations with Azerbaijan—guided by the principle of "two states, one nation"—could serve as a model for Syria, just as in the Nakhchivan example.
Bayraktar also thanked Qatar, another strategic supporter of the project, emphasizing that this cooperation has further deepened the strong friendship between Qatar and Türkiye.
Electricity for 5 Million Households
Bayraktar stated that the natural gas transported from Türkiye to Syria will be delivered as far as Aleppo and Homs. There, 1,200 MW power plants will be commissioned to supply electricity to approximately 5 million households. Currently, Türkiye is already exporting electricity to several regions in Syria, including Afrin and Idlib. The project aims to significantly expand this capacity through new lines and increased volume.
A New Step in Energy Diplomacy
The opening ceremony was also attended by Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir, Azerbaijani Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov, and Chairman of Qatar Development Fund Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti.
During his speech, Minister Bayraktar emphasized that the technical cooperation established between Türkiye and Syria through the signed Memorandum of Understanding in the fields of energy, mining, and hydrocarbons holds strategic importance for peace and prosperity in the region.
