Total Energies; Decarbonization objectives in the steel industry!

France-based Total Energies Vice President Cyril Duchanois shared his insights on decarbonization solutions in the global steel sector as a multi-energy company at the 2nd European Green Steel Summit, which SteelRadar is a media partner of.

"We have participated in many conferences on decarbonization in the steel industry, blast furnaces, DRI, electric arc furnaces, etc. This speech will focus on challenges and solutions," explained Duchanois, adding that they have changed the name and logo of their oil and gas-based company and now aim to offer multi-energy solutions in a global framework.

"As Total Energies, we aim to provide new carbon-free steel production. This is because of Total Energies' new roadmap and our commitment to reach net zero by 2050. We will fundamentally change our production and our solutions. We are going to mix from an oil and gas company to a multi-energy company, offering solutions using green electricity and new molecules."

Duchanois stated that they started offering decarbonization solutions to customers in the metal and aluminum segment a few months ago and that they plan to expand this on a global level. Emphasizing the importance of green electricity, he said that the steel industry needs this route and emphasized that the company's priorities are now these activities.

Noting that steel customers in Europe may face challenges in green hydrogen pricing and supply, Duchanois continued to discuss what Total Energy can provide in these areas. He highlighted the importance of electricity for decarbonization and net zero projects around the world, stressing that it needs to be available 24/7 and that Total Energy will provide solutions to steel customers.

He talked about gas shortages in DRI production, emphasizing the importance of using green hydrogen, and said that as a gas supplier, they can provide energy to Europe and the United States, and that they have partnerships with Qatar. He added that they have one of the largest plants in France and probably in Europe.
