Previously, the plant produced these products, but in April 2015 the hot rolling mill was stopped due to reduced demand. Tokyo Steel currently only produces hot rolled steel at its Tahara plant in the central part of the country, while cold rolling and coating is carried out in Okayama.
Now the demand for flat products is intensifying. In addition, Tokyo Steel states that steel production in electric furnaces has become more competitive as a result of decarbonization processes in the global steel industry. However, commissioning of the hot rolling mill in Okayama is only scheduled for late 2022 or early 2023.
Tokyo Steel has four mini mills in total. Okayama's production capacity is 1.3 million tons per year. Currently, the company produces fittings, structural shapes and galvanized steel.
