According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), steel production in the week in question totaled 1,880,000 net tons, while the capacity utilization rate was measured at 81.4%. In the same week last year, production stood at 1,720,000 net tons and the capacity utilization rate was recorded at 76.6%.
Production also increased by 1.3% compared to the previous week ending May 2, 2026. Output rose from 1,856,000 net tons in the week ending May 2 to 1,880,000 net tons in the week ending May 9. During the same period, the capacity utilization rate increased from 80.4% to 81.4%.
As of May 9, 2026, adjusted year-to-date crude steel production reached a total of 33,285,000 net tons. This represented a 6.3% increase compared to the 31,302,000 net tons recorded during the same period last year. The year-to-date capacity utilization rate was 78.1% this year, compared to 76.2% last year.
According to AISI data, regional crude steel production in the United States for the week ending May 9, 2026 was recorded as follows: 140,000 net tons in the Northeast, 522,000 net tons in the Great Lakes region, 309,000 net tons in the Midwest, 842,000 net tons in the South, and 67,000 net tons in the West. As a result, total weekly production reached 1,880,000 net tons.
