Thailand's scrap imports totaled around 98,000 tons in December 2023, marking a decrease of 15.2% from the preceding month and 16.8% from December 2022.
This decline represented the first month-on-month and year-on-year decrease in the past three months.
The United States and Australia were the primary sources of imports, supplying approximately 30,000 tons (a 1.1% decrease compared to the previous year) and 10,000 tons (a 3.4% increase compared to the previous year), respectively.
For the entire year of 2023, Thailand's scrap imports amounted to roughly 1.32 million tons, indicating a decline of 21.4% compared to the previous year. This marked the first decrease in import volume over the past four years.
In 2023, the top three sources of Thailand's scrap imports were the United States, Japan, and Australia, contributing 23.7%, 12.5%, and 10.1%, respectively.
In January 2024, Thailand's iron scrap imports experienced a slight recovery, reaching 104,877 tons.
The USA was the top exporting country with 29,320 tons, followed by Japan with 10,731 tons and Australia with 10,139 tons.
